I can provide some additional history for this photo: Sid bought the dealership from my dad and my uncle. My grandfather established the dealership in the ‘30s, and they joined him and worked with him (with time-out for WWII) until 1947, when my grandpa died and they sold the place to Sid. I attended a Bears-Lions game at Soldier Field in 1947, and Sid arranged for me to sit on the bench during the second half. An Andy Frain usher came and got me and led me down to the field.
In 1951, my family moved to L.A., but I still consider the North Side my home!
Thanks for the wonderful collection of Chicago images you’re making available.
Warm regards,
Brad Bunnin
And thank you, Brad, for the kind words and tidbits of the past.
You mentioned an Andy Frain usher – that’s one of those names that immediately recalls an era.
All the best,
John Chuckman
John: When you supply an address with a photo, I often check Google maps to see how the area looks now. The dealership and the buildings to its left (to the east) in the photo are gone as are the rest of the buildings on that side of that block. However, the two apartment buildings at the top behind the “Chrysler” and “Sid Luckman” signs are still in existence. Their addresses are 2125 and 2129 South Millard Ave.
The rail tracks presumably were taken out; there is no evidence in current images that they were ever on Ogden Avenue (Old Route 66).
Thanks, John, once again for all of your work. And thanks to Brad for adding the interesting bit of history.
Finally, when I hear the words “Andy Frain usher” my memory tells me that Jack Brickhouse has just said those words.
Glenn in San Diego (no snow…and no mosquitoes)
And thank you, Glenn, for the information.
You might think an address associated with such a well-known person would just pop up, but, no, it doesn’t. I got it off of an old image of some kind of pamphlet or folder.
By the way, I love snow. Always have. Some of my favorite old images of Chicago are ones with snow. And my home now, Montreal, becomes strikingly beautiful in winter. See my site, Chuckman’s Montreal.
All the best,
John Chuckman
